Resonance – When Design, Materials and Craftsmanship Create Lasting Impact

Why do certain publications stay with us? What makes us linger over some books and return to them time and again?

These questions were at the heart of the event “Flirting with All Senses”. For the eighth time, the St. Pölten-based paper mill Salzer Papier and the German cover material specialist Peyer Cover invited guests to an inspiring evening of discussion dedicated to book design, materials and book production. This year’s edition focused on selected publishing projects from the Belvedere Museum Vienna.

Viennese graphic designer Willi Schmid, Eva Lahnsteiner, Head of Product Management at the Belvedere Vienna, and print specialists Hannes Fauland of Gerin Druck and Reinhard Gugler of gugler* Druck shared insights into the creation of exceptional books, from the initial concept through to the finished publication.

Moderated by Erika Pfaffinger, Head of Sales & Marketing at Salzer Papier, and Nadja Scherer, Managing Director of Peyer Cover, the discussion highlighted how closely curatorial concepts, book design, material selection and printing technology are interconnected.

The focus was not only on the interplay between paper, printing and finishing, but also on the challenges and compromises encountered along the way. Ultimately, it is only when all elements work in harmony that a publication can succeed both editorially and aesthetically, leaving a lasting impression on its readers.

An exhibition of selected print projects invited guests to explore outstanding design solutions and distinctive materials at close range.

Culinary delights and the inspiring atmosphere of Vienna’s Formdepot provided the perfect setting for personal encounters and engaging conversations.
