Nuances Nocturnes

With the double publication "Nuances" and "Nocturne", the photographer Alwin Maigler has dedicated his personal declaration of love to classical stage dance. "Nocturne" features dancers from the Stuttgart Ballet, detached and breaking conventions in Stuttgart at night. In "Nuances", the photographer considers the study of the body and movement. The two volumes are designed in great detail by Studio Tillack Knöll as half fabric band. While the images in "Nuances" are a little bit more loose studies of movement, the aim in "Nocturne" was to build up various storylines, some of which take place side by side, others one after the other over the course of a night.

The covers with combined blind and foil embossing on the spine demanded a lot from the finishing process: not only because the two embossings had to fit exactly on the respective volume, but also because the spine design is a cross-volume element.

The spine thicknesses had to be approximately the same so that the letters could be separated in the horizontal centre of each volume. But "Nocturne" has almost twice as many pictures. To compensate this, papers with very different characteristics were chosen. "Nuances" is printed on the high-volume Salzer EOS 90g/sqm paper. This makes the book relatively light, appropriate to the graceful poses of the dancers. "Nocturne", on the other hand, is printed on a low-volume image printing paper, which is heavier but thinner. Combined with the higher number of pages, "Nocturne" weighs almost twice as much. A great effect is created when you hold both volumes in your hands and the difference in weight becomes clear.

There is no classic endpaper to provide a direct introduction to Alwin Maigler's work from the very first page. The book block is therefore glued directly to the book case.
